To all members of the NewCo Community:

From time to time I’ll be writing to you, our NewCo community, with news about our little venture. This isn’t a marketing email with the goal of getting you to one of our 15+ festivals this year – it’s a heartfelt update on how the NewCo movement is spreading around the world.

As you may have heard, in the four years since we first beta-tested this music-fest-meets-business-conference model, the team at NewCo has turned a passion project into a full-fledged business movement. To date, NewCo has welcomed 25,000+ attendees into 1,000+ innovative businesses, civic agencies, and nonprofits working in a range of industry sectors. We’ve expanded significantly, tripling our number of festivals in just three years. That growth is a sure sign of what I’ve predicted: it’s time for “business on a mission” to go mainstream.

In the past few months, we also launched our first in a series of editorial products, the NewCo Daily. This year, expect to see a lot more media from us as we dig into what I believe to be the biggest story in business since the Industrial Revolution: The shift to a more evolved, sustainable, and lasting kind of capitalism. And speaking of business growth: NewCo has more than doubled our staff from 8 to 18, and we raised a seed round of financing from some very great folks.

We’re putting all that momentous energy to good use, launching into 2016 with Mexico City today. The New York Times ranked Mexico City its #1 city to visit in 2016, calling it “A metropolis that has it all.” We couldn’t agree more. From Latin America, we’ll lean into a 2016 lineup which includes 15+ festivals in a global offering of cities as dynamic and diverse as Istanbul and Boston, Austin and Barcelona, Amsterdam and Boulder, San Francisco and Cincinnati, Los Angeles and New York, Silicon Valley and Detroit, London and Oakland.

Can it get better? You asked us to make it so, and we’ve listened. One of your most consistent requests was for help choosing routes through the dozens of choices offered by any given NewCo festival lineup. To that end, this year we’re introducing a new way to explore host cities with NewCo Tours.

NewCo Tours takes the pressure out of picking the “perfect” NewCo schedule. In 2016, in addition to being able to pick your schedule, you’ll also be able to join curated tours designed to highlight the uniqueness of each host city. These tours will be a VIP experience guided by a vetted expert, and they’ll include luxury transportation and exclusive perks.

We’ve come a long way since NewCo was a passion project staffed mainly by volunteers. Your support keeps us inspired and wanting to do even more. Thank you again for helping NewCo grow. Because of engaged attendees and host companies like you, NewCo has been hailed as “a perfect tribute to the current moment” by WIRED and has civic leaders like Mayor Libby Schaaf of Oakland, CA stating in the Oakland Tribune that “We are so proud to have NewCo in Oakland for the first time. This is one more sign of how Oakland is solidifying its place an urban center for innovation in the business, government and nonprofit sectors.” Onward!

If you’d like to stay current with the NewCo story – including original reporting and curated feeds of news about businesses on a mission, sign up for NewCo Daily here. And if you want to learn about a specific city or festival, sign up for our specific city emails right here.

We’re excited to explore the world with you in 2016 and beyond.

All my best,

John Battelle
